In this imaginative new work, Adam Lowenstein explores the ways in which a group of groundbreaking horror films engaged the unsettling legacies of World War II, Hiroshima, and the Vietnam War. Lowenstein centers Shocking Representation around close, incisive readings of Georges Franju’s Eyes Without a Face, Michael Powell’s Peeping Tom, Shindo Kaneto’s Onibaba, and Wes Craven’s Last House on the Left. Through allegorical representations, these films challenged comforting historical narratives and notions of national identity that served to soothe public anxieties in the aftermath of traumatic events. Borrowing elements from both art cinema and the horror genre, these directors also disrupted the boundaries between high and low cinema. Lowenstein also considers how the films of Canadian director David Cronenberg, especially Shivers and Crash, question the categories of nationhood and self and further blur the distinctions between art and genre film. Drawing on the work of Walter Benjamin and fusing film studies with the emerging field of trauma studies, Adam Lowenstein offers a creative reassessment of the modern horror film.
